My handles open the door when you push them forward. I'm assuming that on later models you pull the handle towards you (or towards the rear) to open the door. My owner's manual shows that on the 47 you pull towards you to lock the door and push forward to open the door. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm0112.htm
