The real reason that they don't want you to use lubricant on the studs is the trend t useng closed end lug nuts. Over use of lube can end up packing up on the end of the stud, getting trapped by the closed end of the nut. That will cause a hydraulic lockup of the nut on the stud, preventing proper torqueing.
