I almost always put a drop or two of oil (motor oil) on the wheel studs. I also never use an impact to fully tighten lug nuts, but prefer to snug them up by hand (usually with a four way).

(I have also never used a torque wrench to tighten lug nuts)

I have not had any problems yet, and have owned many vehicles since 1972. On the other hand, I am very careful in my tightening sequence. I always torque lug nuts across from each other and never in a rotational pattern. When I'm done, I always double check to insure that I didn't miss any.

I am not saying my methods are text book approved, but they have been working well for me.
