I have no experience with the two speeds, but the problem I see with using a different hole is that you could easily add to much oil and then as it heats up you may have a fair chance of blowing your hubs oil seals out. That would make for quite a bit more work.
I bet your local parts house could get you another plug if you could manage to get that one out.
