Did it keep running, or just hit a time or two and then stop? Some ignition systems have a resistor bypass wire built into the starter switch that supplies full battery voltage to the coil + terminal anytime the starter is cranking over. Disconnecting the coil wire at the center tower of the distributor cap and grounding it is a surefire way to keep it from starting unexpectedly.
