hey Jerry! first thing to know is when ya don't want it to start, pull the main coil wire before cranking, saves accidents
sounds like you got the coil wired wrong - there's 2 wires, one from the side of the starter actuator that energizes the coil direct when the starter is engaged, one that goes thru the ignition resistor, both should go thru the key switch ... if you've got a shop manual, check the wiring diagram in it, shows all the details
