One thing that always amazes me, when I see n AD 1/2 Ton without the bed, is how short the backend is. I can't imagine getting any kind of grip in snow with a straight rearend and no load on back. For commuting, I think the modern front wheel drive is a dream come true. I once owned a camaro with no positraction, now that is useless on snow.
