Yes, block or frost plug heaters are best. To avoid cracked blocks for a nite or 2 you can use a tarp over the closed hood, with a lightbulb near the floor for heat. We also put a battery charger on for a few hours before we try to start it.
Also, just for your information, I hear that in Alaska where it is reallllly cold, they drain the oil and bring it into the house to keep it warm.
