Chip, take that block back to them and tell them they need to clean it "correctly this time". You paid to have it cleaned and it should be "clean" inside and out. There is no excuse on their part. The rods and caps are only and always stamped on one side only. If they have done differently take them back. Sounds like a bad machine shop and poor work ethics. I had taken my head and block for a 300 six to a (new to me, but closer) machine shop and got the head back with the old freeze plug still in it and carbon still on the valves. This was to be a complete head job. Needless to say I won't be doing business with them again, I will go the extra 75 miles one way, to a good machinist that I know. The whole thing is- They figure you as an individual are only coming in once or twice and so they don't need to worry about you business- WRONG, because you have a big mouth and are going to tell the world-LOL You surely should not be cleaning the head and block and working "outside the box" with parts that aren't perfect in every way. When you get finished with this engine it should and will last the rest of your life if properly maintained. Take your wife or gilfriend with you and have them tell the machinist that they will spread the bad word about them- they know "that" will get around faster then the speed of light-LOL.
