Chip, bummer man, sounds like you have been around the block too many times with your block.
My experience has been great with a small very messy shop in Portland. However, it is a two man shop that does mostly japanese engine builds for the low rider street racing crowd. But they do good work and are meticulous with records and keeping the engine clean. They even had a radial airplane engine they were going through the last time I was in there. Not sure if the messy rule always applies to it being a lousy shop.
