Chiphead-I once helped a friend of mine drop the oilpan off of the 3.8 Cevy V-6 in his 80 Camaro. It was not a "huge" deal, but not a walk in the park, either. We had to undo and remove through bolts holding engine mounts together, then used a floor jack with a block of wood to carefully tip engine up off of it's mounts. Oh yeah, we also had to disconnect the exhaust pipes from the manifolds (that was the hard part). Once the engine was tipped up, we placed 2x4 blocks between the engine mount halves to hold engine up, undid oilpan bolts and dropped it onto crossmember. It JUST cleared coming down and towards the rear of the car. This might not work on a small block, because it's longer, but it's just a suggestion, and may give you a place to start.
