It's my understanding that the air isn't pulled thru the oil. It is channeled downward towards the oil, then takes a sharp U-turn upward on it's way to the carb. Dirt can't make the U-turn and falls into the oil where it is trapped. Anyone who knows more about the physics of this, correct me if I'm wrong.
