Is the motor overheating? Is the radiator getting hot (coolant flow)? Any water loss? Any performance problems? If all seems normal besides heater core, check for non functional heater control valve.
And you want difficult? Try changing the water pump on a '89 caddy with V8 and FWD. Uggh.
