I think the dent you refer to, is the one for the column shifter, and no the 47's used a floor shifted three speed, instead of the side shifted one, used in 48 and on. Also only a 47 gauge set will fit the dash, as the lower two bolts are closer together. Again this is because of not having a column shifter.
