If all else fails - try this:
Scout around for an early '80s Chevrolet with a 305 and 700R4 combo. Chances are you can find one mega cheap. Pull the engine and trans and seel what's left to defray your cost.
The 305 is always overlooked because everybody wants a 350.
Chances are the 305 will be just as peppy as your 283 was, and with an overdrive behind it you will have more highway mph AND better mileage.
