Them 'Glides are really tough, like others have staded, vitually all the dirt track cars run them as well as many drag cars. And as far as the rearend goes, well that mechanic must not be too knowlegable about old Chevies. The '66 would have the 12 bolt rear, which was (in passenger car version) used behind some of the most powerfull cars made in the Muscle car era. It can handle a 350 crate motor easily.
