I haven't followed the whole thread, but the 1st/reverse shift problem is a classic. New bushings on the shift linkage and a gate adjustment of the "H" column box can do wonders.
To get real excited, dump the column setup and do a Hurst, or similar conversion kit...cheap and smooth shifting. Save your scrilla for new rear end gears.
