When I bought Number Seven, the tires that were on there were the normal assortment of varied sizes that is typical of a farm beater. They were all bias ply, and they were older than dirt. There were two 7.00x15's, a 7.50x15, a 9.25x15 and the spare was another 7.50x15.
We figured that since the 9.25x15 worked on the stock rims, we could get away with the 235/75R15's -- which are about twenty thousandths wider on the tread than the 9.25x15's.
They work like champs. They mounted up great, and they ride really nice. I haven't gotten to drive it much, so I can't weigh in on the gas mileage issue, but you really DON'T need to buy new rims, especially if you're looking at something like a 215/85R16's.
