I agree with all the guy's who have posted on this subject. Literally 100's of millions of people worldwide have driven, and still drive, standard transmissions. It becomes a natural human reaction to do so. True, there are exceptions of those who should never drive anything!
I like Glenn's analogy to the B737! I flew heavy airplanes for nearly 40 years.
