I measured the compression rings, top ring end gaps were 0.023-0.025; second ring gaps were 0.019-0.022. The top rings did not have any orientation markings, the second rings had a "TOP" orientation mark and they were placed in the piston ring grooves with the "TOP" facing the piston crown.
I looked at the intake valves and removed one as they were all similar, picture attached. Given the amount of oil deposits on the valve I am wondering if I pulled the trigger too quickly on this being a piston ring/bore problem. I am beginning to think it is a PCV problem and I need to add a catch can or something similar to my PCV system to separate oil that may be coming through that pathway.
My current thought is to get new rings and gaskets, replace the intake valve stem seals, reassemble, and develop some type of oil separator system for the PCV.
It may be crazy but I am considering not touching the cylinder bores or replacing the rod bearings.
