To answer your question... There is no ball in the accelerator pump well. Only the return spring.
Take some fine grit sandpaper or (recommended) crocus cloth and shine up the cylinder wall of the accelerator pump well. Makes the pump more efficient. Oil the pump leather to make it pliable before installing it.
