Your timing is probably too far advanced if you're getting pinging. Set it to the BB on the flywheel per the manual.
Dun dat, but had to advance it from there to get it run with any power (long prior to the carb rebuilding).
Methinks it's to do with running ethanol. Will retard it a touch and see if that helps.
