Since the outside boards are bolted to the angle strips, any expansion would be toward the center of the bed, so it wouldn't matter if the outside boards go all the way to the bedsides or not. But a little gap wouldn't hurt. It looks like some of your boards are pretty close together. There needs to be at least room for the bed strip bolts.
The black stain looks good.
