Put a half pint in the plug near the rear and the rest of a quart in the fill plug in the main body of the tranny. There’s a passage between the two sections of the transmission, but that half pint provides initial lubrication.

[on edit] that’s for the three speed transmission. I forgot you had the 4-speed. The service manual should cover that for the 4-speed.
