About 99.9% of the time, that's caused by accidentally leaving the ignition switch turned on with the engine stopped- - - -and the points closed. If the engine happens to stop with the points open, there won't be any damage. It only takes less than 15 minutes or "ignition on- - - -points closed- - - -engine stopped" to fry a set of points- - - - -sometimes a lot less.
