I never considered using the liquid smoke, I assumed if it came out of the electrical device as a vapor, I would have to replace it with the same. You might be on to something, let us know how that works out for you! Glad to hear you found a replacement starter.
Luckily I have some on hand. I think Hickory will work better than mesquite.
