Pretty sure that no amount of tapping send the gauge to empty. It stays pegged full all the time if key is on. But I have not tried to intentionally short the wire at the sender and tap the gauge. I can try that.
Edit: I have grounded the sending wire with ignition on, but I have not tried to also tap the gauge whilst doing so.
