We found the engine casting number, see attached picture, its 3759365 which seems to indicate that its a 261 engine from 1958-62.
The 261 is a step above a 235, so you've scored on that account.
Another clue that it's not a 216 is that the pushrod cover doesn't go up past the spark plugs to the rocker cover.
