Yep, I do the smell test as well. And I was strongly in the camp that tires should be used till used up......Until the incident described above that could easily have resulted in death or serious injury due to a tire failure on two Michelin LTX tires that had just turned 6 yrs. old. As mentioned the first fail was on the front of the dually, the companion failed on a trailer several weeks later. The tires had zero visual clues they were less than perfect.
It can happen. I do believe old school bias ply tires are much less likely to have age related suprises. Radials, I know it can happen.
