As long as you have the same transmission, bell housing, bell crank and shifting rods, it should operate just like the old 216. Logic has it, something has changed.

Did you have the bell crank off of the bell housing? I have the 216 bell housing, same tranny, same three on the tree, same 235 transplant, basically the same setup as yours. I just reinstalled my 235 after a rebuild and I installed the bell crank incorrectly. It felt good shifting while I was sitting in my garage, with the engine off, but didn't work on the road. It would change the location of the second third-linkage a bit. Take that picture of yours so we can compare. Mine I posted in one of my previous posts.

The clutch adjustment should have about 3/4 to 1 inch of free pedal travel.
