As for doing only a valve-job, it does and can work ,,,,depending on the condition of the rest of the engine.
If the engine is so far gone that the compression will increase from a valve-job enough to do damage to the rest of the engine, the whole thing needed to be rebuilt anyway!!!!!
Go ahead and work on it, play with it and learn.
