I can't agree with everything the others have said.
You still haven't said why the head is off.
As for tearing in to the head, these are the easiest engines to work on. The rest of you had to start somewhere, why can't he? I say go ahead and take one or two valves out, read your manual, and follow the directions. Just don't let the valve spring head you in the head or something.
The new heads on a old engine is very true, you can make matters worse. But new valve seals won't make the engine wear out any faster. Most it will do is slow down the oil burning. Anyhow, its not likely you will ever drive it enough to wear it out.
If you don't think you can do it, then don't. Part of working on stuff is the fun of doing it your self. I would much rather say I did something, right or wrong, than say I paid so and so.
This is a long way from your original question. Us a good biodegradable degreaser and very hot water. You can also use the kero, then degreaser to get rid of the residue.
I guess what I am trying to say is don't back away from a challenge. Go head first and get dirty. Learn how stuff works and why. Heck, just take one out and put it back just to show yourself you can. Your local machinest can always put it back together.
Everybody has there own opinion on what is right and wrong. Its your job to figure out who to go to and who to stay away from. Ask as many questions as it takes till you are satisfied with the results. Its you truck, and your engine. Do as you wish.
