Have your 6 volt starter checked out by a starter rebuild shop. Have it rebuilt if it needs it. They work wonderfully on 12 volts! Turns the engine over very fast which results in quick starts.
Here's another benefit. If you should develop a somewhat discharged 12 volt battery for whatever reason, it will still turn over the 6 volt starter. A twelve volt starter, not so much.
