To add to the no filter side, I have a 1997 Blazer. From the factory it had a remote oil filter.
I had nothing but problems with the lines running to the filter leaking.
So at about 200,000 miles I removed the filter and hoses and installed a block off plate on the engine. That was 190,000 miles ago. I now have 390,000 miles on the engine with nothing ever been done to it.
I change the oil at 7000 miles, as the owners manual recommends.
This engine still runs strong with very little oil consumption.
