Today with two helpers, I made another attempt to install a new Windshield in my 1960 Apache.We three concluded the new gasket from Jimmy Carter is just not going to work. We followed the suggestions of restoman57, red58, and wilbur from a previous post such as taping with blue painters tape, and the use of two ropes... It is just too stiff and bulky. The molded channel for the glass is too narrow to allow the glass to seat in the trench..it tends to roll out one way or the other. Also the gasket flattens considerably on the sharp bends at the lower sides with the inner and outer edges wrinkling too much to ever seal out water.The cab overhang at the top of the windshield complicates the installation since the top has to be tucked under the overhang before the bottom can be positioned.
I would like to know if any of you Stovebolters out there have successfully installed a windshield in a 1960 through 1962 using a gasket from a present day supplier, and if so, which supplier.
When I get a gasket which I believe will work, I plan to try to get one of the local auto glass shops to install it. They may not be interested since I already have my windshield.
