Today with two helpers, I made another attempt to install a new Windshield in my 1960 Apache. We three concluded the new gasket from Jimmy Carter is just not going to work. We followed the suggestions of restoman57, red58, and wilbur from a previous post such as taping with blue painters tape, and the use of two ropes... It is just too stiff and bulky. The molded channel for the glass is too narrow to allow the glass to seat in the trench..it tends to roll out one way or the other. Also the gasket flattens considerably on the sharp bends at the lower sides with the inner and outer edges wrinkling too much to ever seal out water. The cab overhang at the top of the windshield complicates the installation since the top has to be tucked under the overhang before the bottom can be positioned.
I would like to know if any of you Stovebolters out there have successfully installed a windshield in a 1960 through 1962 using a gasket from a present day supplier, and if so, which supplier.
When I get a gasket which I believe will work, I plan to try to get one of the local auto glass shops to install it. They may not be interested since I already have my windshield.

Try Steele for a good gasket, also newer glass is thinner than the original.

Maybe a dumb question....but you do have the right glass? Put three windshields in a '39 chevy and broke the first two at $450.00 each. Came to find out vendor was sending '37 chevy glass instead. Vendor ate the cost but still a big hassel and had everyone walking on eggshells when we installed #2 and #3.

Another dumb question,
Are you sure you are putting the gasket on the glass correctly?
I mean your putting the glass in the gasket in the right groove. I have made that mistake myself.

Once again, you guys asked the right questions. At one point with the gasket on the glass, I was convinced the glass did not fit. We removed the gasket and carefully positioned the glass as close as as was safe and could see the glass is correct.
Wilbur nailed it about the gasket. I have a 1963 (my truck is a 1960) shop manual, and the gasket more nearly matched the cross section shown in the manual when turned the way I had it using the only "flat bottomed " groove for the glass.
I had to go back and look at it the third or fourth time before I realized he was right. I did have the gasket "wrong side out". I had dismissed the differences between the new gasket and the cross section shown in the manual as being a poor after-market fit. I believe it is going to work.. Thanks again to all..

Would like to report that I was fortunate enought to get a glass company to send installers out to install my windshield. The first two I asked turned me down saying it was too difficult. Th third company, who goes by the name "Low Price Glass" came out and installed it for me at a reasonable price. I would not have believed it had I not seen it with my own eyes. But they were in my driveway no longer than thirty minutes, perhaps less.. Of course the old windshield was out and the area cleaned.
The lead man installed the gasket by himself with practically no asistance from the helper..and it stayed on..no tape..took him no longer than a couple of minutes to do so. I guess I'll have to eat my words about the Jimmy Carter gasket. It worked well for somebody who knew what he was doing.

That's great news. A little experience goes a long way.
