Jon, I'm a little confused- - - -didn't the automatic GTO's run a Turbo 400 3 speed? I'm not aware of the Powerglide ever being mated up to a Pontiac engine. Earlier Pontiacs ran either the 4 speed Controlled Coupling Hydramatic or the POS Roto-Hydramatic, but I'm not aware of either one being used in the GTO. I do agree that three speeds beats two, and four speeds beats either one.
