I believe that the balancer needs to be locked to the crankshaft in order to function properly. That's why the crankshaft and balancer are machined for a key.

I'm just wasn't sure why the drill guide needed to be broached. Now I realize from Jerry's explanation that the drill guide may be used not only on a partially assembled engine on a stand but also on an assembled engine with the timing cover in place.

The way I find new information is by asking questions. There is no such thing as a dumb question. I answer questions about slope stability and foundation design all the time in my work as a geologist. Things that are obvious to me are often not obvious to non-geologists. That does not mean they should be demeaned for asking.
