I have seen people do it both ways, and I have done it both/all ways: a warmed static engine, and a warmed running engine (with and without the cut-open valve cover - which is much less messy).
Some of were commenting on the 54/55 valve cover not being scrap. That style cover has more value than the much more common non-vented 235/261 valve covers.
