Im basically doing the same thing as you, but before sent it of to the painters I used some green rust repeliant (found it at Lowes), Like they said it wont prevent it forever but when i put it on my truck it looked like it was working, some bubbles came up, then it dryed and I sent it to the painters. But if you dont watch what you've done, you will notice new rust coming back. I suggest you do that then keep it out of the rain then send it to the painters. I'm not a big fan too, but whats $15 going to hurt you? Hope I helped...
