Do it your way, Tim (Carl, and most other posters agree with with that).
My trucks are as close to original appearance as is possible/practical for me (with some "hidden" "upgrades"). I also drive them (or, I will drive the ones being "restored"). I call them rolling museum exhibits. They will also go to my daughter and/or to her offspring, with a good pile of spare parts.
