Caso: Bypass resistor/ballast resistor/ceramic block.
As said, you don't need it to fire, you do need it to run. I advised a temp wire from batt pos to coil pos so as to bypass the bypass.
Like you I was thinking something busted, like a timing gear or ?. But no indication of backfire or carb blowing. An electrical component can terminate that fast. Revving may have just been enough more juice/stress to blow an electrical part. So we'll see.
Last time this happened to me they had to call Father Flaherty with his bull horn to call me down off the ledge.
