I've see lots of flywheels where the area that the clutch goes against is "raised" a little and looks like a "pad". I don't know the reason but I've seen many this way.
...and it could be that the "pad" is how much you can turn one before it gets to thin or maybe its thicker to act as a "heat sink" to keep it from getting to hot and warping. Just my perspective, no documentation to back it up. | | |
