I decided yesterday was the day to do one of the "final touches". Well, I must admit I need some HELP. NOTE: I have a '53 door on the right side and '54 on the left. Well, I need someone to tell me, real slow and in good english, how that metal strip goes. I put it up to door and simply can't push it down on the rubber far enough to get the screws in. I ended up pulling the weather stripping loose just to see if it'd work at all. Someone clue me in here. The weather stripping does get glued to the bottom of the door first...correct. Then the metal retainer goes next...right. Just what position does the retainer go. I know the holes go "up" but you can turn it end to end and its different. What am I missing here guys. Since 47 through 54 is suppose to be the same I took a look at Denny Grahams(1950) pictures and it looks like his retainer is more of an "L" than what I have. Here is the Retainer I have JimCarters & American Classic have same#.. http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/cart/index.asp?sdes=DP121Classic Parts http://www.americanclassic.com/asp/...;iyear=1952&ytype=to&exyear=1954Now, more about the doors. To confuse things... I found out sometime ago that the 53 door uses 1/4 oval head bolt/screws to hold the door panel on and also the lower door inspection plate...but the '54 door&cover, are a little different...so the screws work good on the 53 door but not the 54 door. Retainer holes on the 54 door are different than the '53. Now, take a look at Denny's retainer at bottom of page. Its different than the ones the vendors offer but should be the same? http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/1950_doors&page=allDoes anyone understand my dilema? Just WHICH is correct...and how the heck do you get it to where you can get the screws in?

I bet you have the retainer "inside - out." It's easy to do because they look like they should go on the other way. I bought mine from The Truck Shop, but they look the same as American Classic. > The holes are at the top. > The bottom lip bends away from the door. i.e. - the edge of the lip does not press into the rubber. > The rubber is held by the bend, not by the edge of the retainer. The "bend" rests in a crease in the rubber. The rubber may almost fold up and over the edge. Denny's retainer is installed as I described, but the lip is much longer than mine or the ones from suppliers. I'll shoot a pic of my '54 door tomorrow if you want. FAM Section 1, Sheet 20 states that the weatherstripping is glued to the door. Screws in FAM Sect 1 Sht 20: Inspection plate screws = #162462 ... #10 X 3/4" self tapping http://www.rsp.net.au/ProductDetails.aspx?prodID=162462I think that I used chrome plated 3/4" #10 with #6 oval head sheet metal screws. (or #8 with #6 head) Bought from the Truck Shop. Weatherstrip retainer screws = #161857 ... #8 X 1/2" self tapping http://5999.iso-group.com/Public/PartDetail/161857/51222609/161857.aspxI think that I used chrome plated #8 X 1/2" oval head sheet metal screws. Not sure.

I spent another hour looking at it today. I THINK I can push the rubber down far enough to do what your talking about. It COULD be that the rubber I have has hardened up some as I bought a lot of stuff along the way and stored it....some stuff up to over 2 years before I actually used it. ...or the vendor I got it from has harder compounds??(notSTEEL) I have the "#" of screws your talking about and even the same sizes self taping. I'm not beyond doing what "makes" it work. Even though I think I understand you directions I would appreciate a picture if you don't mind. I want to be SURE of the orentation of the lip. It just didn't seem to me that the bottom lip should be turned up to catch all the dirt and stuff! Thanks again. You give me hope....at least I can now go back out there and glue that one side back in place and go from there. I will get r done..... I will git r done.....with your help Oh, I have the FAM and believe I looked at the pages....but it was late at night or I didn't understand what I was reading. (excuses) EDIT: Lonnie, I just went out to the shop to get my FAM and checked it out. Its strange that on Sect.1 sheet 1.05 that it shows the retainer with EIGHT retainer screws while the retainer in Sect.1 sheet 20 shows a different one! Oh well.

I thought the edge of the lip pressed into the rubber, too. I was running out of interior paint when I painted the reproduction retainers that I bought from the Truck Shop, so I lightly sprayed what I thought was the back side and sprayed a beautiful coat on the "good" side. Well, the good side ended up being the back side. It looks OK, but I see it every time I look down.
RE: four screws in Sheet 20 vs. eight screws in Sheet 1.05 ... Sheet 20 is only a partial view of the door. See the squiggly line on the left side of the door and the curved line on the left side of the retainer. The line on the retainer is directly under the hinge side of the inspection plate.

Thanks Lonnie. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 | Here are three photos of the door weatherstrip retainer on my '54. (The pictures also show that someday I'll have to fix the rust in the bottom of the doors where a previous owner butt-head packed the doors with carpet padding to make the speakers sound better - - speakers that he mounted in holes that he cut in the doors. Padding trapped water. You can guess the rest of the story.) Reproduction retainers from The Truck Shop. > OVERALL VIEW PASSENGER SIDE> CLOSEUP WITH WEATHERSTRIP IN NORMAL POSITION> CLOSEUP WITH WEATHERSTRIP RETRACTEDNotice how the top edge of the weatherstrip lies under the retainer. The weatherstrip "folds" over the lip of the retainer. NOTE: This thread was lost for a while, I guess during the change over to the new server. So I sent the photos and info to Alvin in a PM, but now the PM has disappeared, but the post has returned. Finally - I sent it in an email ... success. I am posting the info after the fact to complete the thread.

I now know what I need to know. I did get your email and the pics were great. I think my retainer is shaped just a "TAT" different but I'm sure its meant to be the same and I think I can "mash" the rubber down enough to get the screws in....if not some new weather stripping may be in order.
I'm good to go now... and I'm sure this nice photo of that retainer will be used time and time again.
EDIT: just food for thought. While trying to figure this out I looked at at least a half dozen AD's, or more, and NONE of them had the retainer on the doors! I looked at a nice "modified" one tonight at a cruse-in and guess what...no retainer.

They were the clincher. I now have the retainer on the passenger side but would like to make a few comments about putting it on. At first I made sure I had my weatherstripping on correctly and glued real good. After looking at the pics I was still uncertain if I could get the retainer "pushed down" enough to get the screws in it so here is a trick or two that helped me. First I moved/wiggled, and held the retainer so that I could get ONE screw in on the end. Once I got the screw started good I was able to get the retainer to "lay" down on the weather stripping pretty good BUT I still could not get the retainer and door holes to line up. I tried to use a small punch to line them up but it didn't work so well. So, I skipped to about the center of the door and then took a good size screwdriver and put it in the "groove" of the retainer and pushed down real hard. To my surprise it was just enough to line up the holes and get the screw started. I did this at each hole and as I went along I kept "flipping" the bottom edge of the weather stripping itself to make sure it was all lining up right. Tighten each screw a little at a time so the retainer tightens up evenly to avoid putting a "dent" in it which it will if you tigten one screw all the way before getting the others lined up and tightened a bit. I did not have my camera but will still take a couple pics and post here for posterity. The trick is to make sure the weather stripping is on right... and get the retainer turned correctly. Thanks again to Lonnie for posting pics. Stovebolters are ... Grrrrrreat. Here are MY pictures after completing the job. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r19/LutherParris/52Panel/Bottomwindlacemetalstrips004.jpghttp://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r19/LutherParris/52Panel/Bottomwindlacemetalstrips003.jpgGame over
