Clifford 4-barrel manifold with water heat.

If the hoses running to the manifold are in line with the heater, how does that heat the manifold if the water is not circulating through the heater? The way I understand it the installation involves cutting one heater hose and putting the manifold in between the cuts, in line with the heater. I know that's an over-simplified explanation.

Or am I thinking wrong here?

You're OK, but the heater doesn't HEAT the water it's just a vehicle for the heat via the heater core which is a mini radiator which radiates heat into the cab. You adjust the heat via a cable which limits or shuts off the hot water coming from the heated water in the engines internal water jackets. You'll get your heat... oh wait a minute.. I think I know what you're talking about....what if you DON'T HAVE THE HEATER ON... IS THE WATER STILL GOING TO CIRCULATE?

I think most people run a separate heating loop which is what I have planned for my Edelbrock conversion.

It depends on which heater you have. The deluxe heater has a flow control valve which would limit the amount of water heat into the intake. The non-recirc heater does not come with a valve.

However, you are likely to have the cabin heat on when you need manifold heat anyway, so its not too likely to be a problem.

Thanks everyone. I'm getting a thing that adds a hose fitting and I'll simply add a T to the return line so that water circulates continuously.

Thanks to everyone for clearing this up for me.

Fantastic water heated plumbing is shown here. This is one of the cleaner applications I have seen.

I actually went w/o a heated manifold for about a month and a half this past summer and the truck performed poorly. I made my own bottom plate similar to this. Here's water heated loop terminus.

Thanks for the compliment on my system Cosmo! The idea actually came from 4onthefloor(thanks again). You don't need the "T" if you utilize a bypass thermo housing and a waterpump from a 261 as 4onthefloor suggested. The waterpump that NAPA sells for the 235 is the same as the original 261 pumps. They have the dual fitting holes and will work. The thermo housing from a 261 may take some time to find. An option to that is the fitting plate that Tom Langdon sells that goes between the therm-housing and the head. It is good because the fitting comes out on the drivers side so the tube bending will be cleaner and easier. The heatplate started out as a 4"X5" piece of 5/16" flatbar. I cut it to size with a hacksaw, then shaped it with a grinding wheel. The lines are cheap brake lines from NAPA. The fittings took a while to gather and get right, but then all you need is a cheap tubing bender and a flaring kit and your off to the races. It helps to have a neighbor with a machine shop who can drill and tap the inlet/outlet holes in the plate! The moral of the story is you don't have to be a mechanic to do it.
