How hard is it to swap one 4 spd. Transmision for the same on a 39 truck. I bought another transmission and had it checked out. Now I need to install it or have the shop install it ($450). The truck has an enclosed drive shaft and the transmissions Are the same. I've never changed one out and was wondering how hard it is?
Thanks
Tom

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

You could probably do it yourself in a day. Rent a transmission jack or modify the saddle on your floor jack to do the lifting. I've found the hardest part is to line-up the splines when inserting the transmission through the clutch- requires a lot of jiggling to get it just right. It isn't rocket science if you have a shop manual to help you but it can be a good physical workout. Good luck!

At the link that Achipmunk provided above, are 1938 and 1941 Shop Manuals. The instructions for removal/replacement should be the same for yours. Guide pins are referred-to for removal.

Those guide pins are invaluable for installation (and, safe removal). They not only set up the correct angles, but they allow you to more easily rotate the transmission shaft (from the ear) so that you can to line up the splines on the front shaft to the clutch (as noted by Pinetree, above).

Buy some bolts of the correct length and cut off the caps - these are your guide pins. The two bolts need to be long enough for the transmission to "sit" on them as you slide in the transmission (using a jack until the transmission is supported by the guides).

not hard at all. i did it myself and it came out fine. remove floor pan, jack up truck, disconnect drive shaft plus yoke, then remove the tranny..about a hour or so of work.
