After reading a recent post about the amount of heat the resistor puts out on a 6 to 12 volt conversion and then going out and feeling my resistor while the heater was running, I need to reconsider my setup and find a 12v heater motor for my Deluxe Red Head heater.

Anyone know of a source?

Greg,
Thanks for the tip. Looks like I can remove the fan motor without removing the heater from the truck. Might rip into it tomorrowish to get a better view of the current motor for compatibility.

With Greg_H's help, I landed a VDO PM354 motor from my local O'Reily's.

Had to do some modifications to the heater motor support bracket due to the length of the new motor vs original. I had very little room so fitting the new motor was a bear. Nonetheless, got the new motor squished in and up and running. Will say it is far noisier at the slowest speed than my original 6v motor at it's fastest speed. Not sure how long I will last with it.

Here's some pics:

I used a similar motor on my 50 (Harrison),
motor is not VDO brand but had a orange and black wire. Reversible depending what wire you grounded.

The brand I used is unimotor 14522 it is very quite.

Although mine is installed in the old 6 volt motor housing.

I believe I purchased the motor at truck shop in orange.

I'm currently running my 6 volt blower motor but have converted everything else to 12 volts. I did change my original heater switch to a 12 volt as the original would start to glow after about 20 seconds of running. Knowing that this is bad, I changed it out for 12v switch. I've been wanting to put the 12v fan motor in that I have on my bench (direct replacement supposedly) but just havn't done it yet. I'm about ready to though as I'm driving my truck nearly every day now and it is cold outside! My 6v motor is LOUD AS HELL! I think it is spinning at 5 time its recommended RPM cause there is some serious volume comming out of there as well. Question: Were you able to change out the motor without pulling the heater coil out? Second Q: I have the accessory power wire for my alternator connected to the back of my heater switch. Could this be the reason my heater spins so fast? My fan motor speed fluxuates with engine RPM (alternator output). Where else should I have that alternator wire connected for power when the key turns on?

It sounds like your heater fan is running on 12v. You should check this with a meter.

Yes, I was able to remove/replace the heater motor without touching the heater core....

But.....I hate the sound the new 12v heater motor is putting out. Way too loud of a wirrrring sound. Need to find another motor or go back to 6v with the resistor.

My 6volt motor is definitely running on 12v. What kind of resistor would you use if you went back to the 6v motor? Where would you get it? My 6v motor is running fine bit I'd like to slow it down. Maybe that's an easier fix than going to the 12v motor just to find out I don't like it.

Thanks for the info!

That will work. Just mount it some where it can cool. It will get hot!

Or you can buy three for the same price from here and have a couple of spares:

I tried one of these a while back and it exploded while I was driving down the road. The inside (ceramic?) shot out of the aluminum and shrapnel hit me in the shin. What did I do wrong?

maybe what you did wrong is not have it mounted on something that improved the heat dispersal, only type of voltage reducer I've used for that much draw is heavy ceramic block style
