the base on my hood ornament is bent and has a broken off piece. the chrome shop that I went to says it cant' be repaired. I'm looking for another one. but while looking on the computer I came across a product called muggy weld. has any one used this? does it work? does anyone know of a shop that could do the repair? thanks, brian

Brian,

Can you post a photo of the parts? It is hard to make recommendations without seeing the damage. I have a few front emblems with different problems.

Are you referring the the standard 54/55 front hood emblem or the accessory hood ornament (eagle)?

Brian,

I have used MuggyWeld a fair amount while working on parts for old tablesaws that are no longer made. I also used it as a quick-and-dirty way to fill the pinholes in my brass radiator tank and it hasn't leaked since.

I don't know whether the strength is the same, but I have been unable to break the parts apart that I "welded" with this stuff. In my humble opinion, it's a GREAT low-heat brazing product that works especially well for pot metal. It's just as easy to use as plumbing solder. I plan on using it to repair my own hood ornament when I get around to that.

You have to use their flux solution, but it makes it easy for a novice like me to tell if you're getting the right amount of heat going.

I have been very happy with it.

Best,

Jim

thank for the replies. tim, my ornament is the eagle but it's much longer than any that I have ever seen. its at the chrome shop so I can't get an measurement but I would guess its about 16-18" long. jim , that's why I want to fix it.

I just checked the outline on the hood and its 15". the holes are 12" apart. is that longer or does it look longer than the ones in the catalogs?
