Hey Guys,

On my '46 I bought these anti-droop springs from Jim Carter and installed them. That all works well and is not a problem.

But I also found remnants of these "door handle repair springs" that I did not replace, as I didn't notice them until after I had bought most of my parts already. Does anyone have any good pictures of where and how these install? Are they important, and should I be concerned? I'm assuming the might help with return of the door handle and keeping it from being over-centered? Is this correct?

I'm not sure I understand but..... I think you have the outside door handle "anti-droop" spring installed and the part you found in the door is the spring for the inside door handle control arm or the inside actual door handle.
Two different animals. And there is no telling how long that spring may have been in the bottom of the door... in other words that same spring may have been replaced a few times over the years?

.... maybe I'm making sense, maybe not. I'm tired!!

No, you misunderstood my question.

I want to know where the Inside Door Handle Repair spring goes. It makes no difference if it has ever been replaced...? I found the broken spring on the link that connects the door handle to the door latch mechanism. I don't know if I should have it (since I don't currently), and where to install it if I were to. This is going to be a specific thing that a 41-46 owner should be able to answer, I hope?

Surely someone has a photo of this or knows how they install? 60 views and only one responder?

My guess....again, would be the spring you found inside the door may have been in the window regulator.

Its been a loooong time since I had my 46 so I'm basically stabbing in the dark.... but trying to help. Besides, it bumps you back to the top!

I have 46 and my doors do not have that spring. It might be gone but the lock works fine. Why not ask the seller Of the spring?

I appreciate that you're trying to help but that's not correct. The spring was on the door handle check link, and I want to know how it installs. I'm sure that it is to keep the inside DOOR HANDLE returning and to keep it from over-centering, but I'm not sure exactly how it goes in there.

Because the seller of the spring sells offshore parts that don't always fit or install right, and I figured someone over here would be wiser.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll just order the springs and figure it out myself.

My point was my truck does not have these springs and the door latch works fine. I have seen these springs offered by US companies. Chevys of the 40's has them I think Patrick's has them. Good companies to speak with.

Thanks for your reply. I should have added that I played with the inside handle on mine again since my original post and it doesn't return as it probably could with the spring, so I'm going to try and install these in the new year.

46gmcpu,

Are you referring to the spring that makes the inside door handle stay under tension? The spring is approximately 1 1/2 diameter and attaches on the door strut and the door handle mechanism. I assembled my doors, but may have taken an image.

Yes sir, that's the one. I'm just wondering how exactly it installs. My interior door handles can over-center and don't seem to return properly, so I'm wondering if this would fix it?

Tom,

The spring fits over the inside door handle stem that is riveted to the door strut. Look for two stop positions, one on the rotating portion of the stem, and the other on the strut. The spring has bends on each end that will catch on the two door parts. After several attempts and personally questioning your intelligence it will miraculously come to you. At least that is how it worked for me as the remnants of the springs were laying on the bottom of the door as well. Just try every combination. I don't have access to my image files right now, but I will look to see if I saved an image if you have problems. Good luck.

The spring really makes the difference in operability, you will be happy with it.

Paul

Paul,

Thanks for the info. I'll just buy a couple I guess, and see if I can figure how to install them.
