Well I am not sure really how to post this but I am going to give it a shot.

I am trying to figure out to get my truck to sound like this. Here he says "1957 Chevrolet Pickup Truck 3200 series. FENTON dual carb intake manifold, FENTON dual exhaust manifold, (2) 1bbl Rochester carbs, 235cui bored out .40 over. Flowmaster 40series mufflers."

Non Banjo sound 235 with 40 series mufflers

1st off I have a 1956 Chevy 3100 just rebuilt and here are the specifics: 235 bored .030 with a stock 261 cam, "848" head with the hardened seats, Fenton 2x1 Intake and Fenton cast iron headers with the split exhaust, dual Carter Weber progressive 2bbl carbs, Mini H.E.I. distributer, and crank turned -.010 x -.010. I will be using a t-5 tranny for the transmission.

What will be the correct size exhaust pipes to run?

Do I need an "X" or "H" pipe?

Does anyone have their truck or car sound like the clips above? If so what did they use or what did they do?

I went to the search here but it really did not answer my question. If someone knows of a link I will want to read it or even better if they have a sound clip I would like to hear it too.

Many thanks again guys

I always thought the Fenton dual exhaust manifolds used the same size exhaust pipes as a stock single did.
Doubt many use an H or X crossover pipe in the dual setup.

The H pipe makes the sound more mellow, doesn't crackle as much.

I'd like to put dual exhaust on mine, but I think I'm going to go with just a split stock manifold like I've seen on here.

I don't have 1st hand experience with this engine set up.I have had a 250 with split exhaust that had a good sound. I slpit it 2 and 4 on my dads advice,he was right it had a v8 sound.I have read ,I believe on clifford performance web sight, that these engines sound best with a 2-1/4' pipes and 3" chambered mufflers.I to want a good old time hot rod sound.

Nope. You are not alone. I kept waiting for the deep throat of a lumpy cam, but only got banjos. Oh well. Have a great Thanksgiving anyway.

No Banjo's in this one...
Maybe the pipes aft of the muffler are a bit to long on giving it some "CowBell" but... it's a sweet sound just the same.

I agree and it's the sound I was after with essentially the same engine setup first described. The original mufflers were so loud that I vetoed them and replaced them with a more or less stock unit that I have on ther now. I really love the sound in this clip Bill. Thanks for sharing it.

Hey guys I corrected the link from my original post after I got home from work today. dang

Here it is 235 exhaust sound

So allow me to start over.

What will be the correct size exhaust pipes to run?

What mufflers do you recommend?

Don stated the H pipe makes the sound more mellow, doesn't crackle as much is that the same for the x pipe? I am not a fan of the crackle but love the somewhat low tone at idle.

I guess another concern I would have would be cruising on the highway would a different muffler be better for cab noise?

Thanks guys

My Dad told me that they used 1 3/4" pipe, used mufflers that were at least 24" long and put them as far back as possible and then put the crossover pipe in. He said that they would use steel pack straight thru mufflers.

To get that specific sound of that truck you'll need flowmaster mufflers. They have that unique sounds. I have an H-pipe on my truck and can't believe the difference in sound. X-pipe and H-pipes serve the same purpose, an X pipe just flows smoother. I would go with an H pipe and the flowmaster. Don't go over 1-3/4" for a stock motor.

Dual stock 1954 235 truck mufflers on an original diameter dual pipe system (Fenton Headers) in appoximately the original positon (relative to the original pipe/muffler) on my 261 was a nice enough sound to cause a young cop to call in my speeding violation on a country road because "your truck sounded so hot that I thought you might try to run me".

I asked him if he would put that in writing, so that I could show that to my friends.

Use something like this,
http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers/ultra-flo-welded-x/
Go with a 2" pipe off the manifolds, adapt to the 2 1/4" muffler, reduce out the muffler back to 2" tail pipes.

Dynomax are the best mufflers made.

On my 54 325 I run Fentons with 2" pipe with some standard off the shelf 12" mufflers. Sounds good, doesn't drone, good for daily driving. Still enough to get people to look.
Now, I just got done setting up the exhaust on my 55 truck with a 235 and once again Fentons, 2" but 24" brockman mellowtones with glass. I haven't fired it yet but should sound good. There are some videos on utube that have the mellowtones in action if you are interested.

When I was trying to figure out the setup, I determined that a crossover would defeat the unique sound of the 235. They have that unique sound because of the header set-up vs. fireing order. Gives it that 'rolling-lumpy' sound.

Now that's funny. Do you have a sound clip? My brother is a cop here and once I got busted by one of the guys in his squadron. The traffic guys are always so nice before getting on his Harley and handing me the ticket he said he would tell my brother I said "hi."

Do you have any links to the videos? Or a sound clip of either one of yours?

I do not understand so are you using a stock exhaust manifold and then splitting it to run duals? How do you split it 4 times or what did I miss?

Thanks guys

I just emailed the tech support for Flowmaster and Dynomax to see what they say but if you guys have any sound clips minus banjos I would love to hear them. I will post their response. If I can hear one of your guys clips and its close the one I like I will bug you to see what you did and the I will do that . Thanks again

A 2/4 split on a stock manifold is what DIY guys did before fentons came along. An extra outlet is welded on the manifold and a block off plate installed to separate the two sides.

I just spent too much time searching Youtube for a 4/2 exhaust note video and while there may be some there... I can't find any that identify the 'split' as 4/2 or 2/4. Plenty of 3/3 fentons out there though!

FYI Update I received an answer back from Dynomax. I just asked basically what I asked here. What they recommend for pipe size and what muffler. Here is their reply. I find it funny they can design a muffler but have no idea the recommend sizes for what they design. Maybe this old stovebolt is just to old for them lol OH well. One down and one to go with the muffler manufactures.

Thank you for your inquiry for Dynomax Exhaust. We appreciate your interest in our products. I am sorry but we do not do pipe sizing for custom applications. The pipe sizing is done by the engineers for stock cat back system applications. You would want to contact a performance exhaust shop to help you size the pipes correctly for your application.

My exhaust guy suggested Dynomax turbo mufflers in more or less the original position with 2" pipes straight out the back to go with my stock split manifold and I love the sound and would go the same route again.

The you tube link in my signature has me stepping on it a little after a minute in. It had been sitting in the garage for about 6 weeks when I decided to do an insurance video and was cold and thus smokier than when warm. I had my exhaust system in before switching to a 261 cam and can say that change had a huge influence on sound but I see you're there already thumbs_up

That's a pretty cool setup. What I really like your doing 65-70 on the freeway and you can still hear inside the cab.

A few days ago I sent Flowmasters support a link to this video 57 chevy with flowmasters, and asked them what he thought this system was. Today I checked my email and this is the response I received from Flowmaster. Mike D'Addario Regional Sales Manager Flowmaster, Inc. sent me this response. I listened to the Video and it is hard to say what he has. The General Rule of Thumb is this....If you have up to 160hp you would use 2.25", if you have up to 250hp you would use 2.50" and up to 300hp and up you would use 3.00 for a Dual Exhaust Set up. You would want to use an H Pipe to balance out the sound, I don't think the truck in the video has one because of the way it sounded when he let off the throttle. I would suggest the Super 40 series mufflers as it will take some of the bite out of it. If you want one step quieter go with the Delta Flow 40 series. We sell a complete universal pipe kit including the h pipe in both Aluminized and Stainless Steel.

If give me a few things to think about now. Hope this helps some one too.
